Traditional Martial Arts: |
Description:
Traditional Martial Arts at Main Street Martial Arts are part of our core program offerings. Traditional martial arts focus on the historical strengths and values of the martial arts practitioner. The core strengths and values of the ancient martial artist can best be summarized in the seven virtues of the Samurai Warriors of Ancient Japan:
These virtues and values underly the philosophy of the true martial artist as they have for 6,000 years. We incorporate these values into our training practice in both our children's and adults' programs. Children learn dedication, courtesy, courage, and the proper equal balance of strength and sensitivity applied in a caring and fair way. We run a progressive program that builds children step-by-step toward the same skill sets that the adults are learning in a truly authentic pedagogical method. Adults build upon their own successes that they have attained in thier own life, and make connections between the lessons "on the mat" and with everyday living. All students participate at their own pace in a series of powerful conditioning programs that build the integrated strength of the mind, body, and spirit. Traditional martial arts are the pinnacle of human achievement in refining the intricate motor skills, synaptic pathway development of the brain, and the irrepressible uplifting of the joyous spirit. There are few programs of any kind that can accomplish all this. Come try a free class and speak with our instructors. We will be happy to start you on your journey to Black Belt and the power of the human spirit. |
Classical Japanese Swordsmanship:
|
Description:
Classical Japanese Swordsmanship at Main Street Martial ArtsMuso Jikiden Eishin-ryu Iaijutsu is a Japanese martial art that was developed for use by the warrior class of Feudal Japan with a direct lineage dating back over 450 years. Hayashizaki Jinsuke Shigenobu, was the founder of this school of classical Japanese swordsmanship which was originally known as Hayashizaki-ryu, and consisted mainly of techniques conceived for the Tachi (a larger, more deeply curved blade that was for use by mounted warriors). Late in the 16th Century, Hasegawa Eishin Shuzei no Suke, the seventh generation successor to Hayashizaki-ryu, adapted the simultaneous drawing and cutting methods of Iai to the newly developed Katana or Daito (the weapon that is today frequently referred to as the Samurai Sword). As a result of Eishin Sensei's modifications, his lineage of Hayashizaki-ryu came to be known as Eishin-ryu. This system of swordsmanship has now been passed down in an unbroken line of succession from grandmaster to grandmaster for 20 generations. The Japanese term for passing a legacy person-to-person from one generation to the next in unbroken succession is "jikiden" translated as direct transmission, "heart to heart". A style, school, or system of martial arts is called "Ryu" in Japanese, a term that derives its meaning from the endless flow of a river. Thus, the style of Iai practiced today is: Muso ("Unequaled") Jikiden ("Direct Lineage") Eishin-Ryu ("style of Eishin") |
Traditional Amrit Yoga:
|
Description:Amrit Yoga at Main Street Martial Arts with Ms. Heather Eilering; Certified 500 hr. Yoga Instructor, Certified Amrit Yoga Nidra Facilitator:Having practiced yoga for many years, Heather realized she wanted to share the amazing healing properties of yoga with others. She opened Santosha Yoga Studio in Cranston, RI, with her business partner in June of 2006 in order to create a community where people could teach and heal together. Trained by Yogi Amrit Desai, Heather has received her 500 hour Amrit Yoga Teacher certification as well as Amrit Yoga Nidra certification. Having trained in Yoga and Yoga Nidra, Heather has a unique, holistic view of the ancient practice of yoga. She uses this understanding to empower her students to explore and discover the light and peace residing within their own being, which allows them to take their yoga practice off the mat into their everyday lives. Heather's willingness, in her own words, to "get out of my own way" allows her to listen for internal guidance while teaching and sharing what she receives with her students. Heather not only teaches at her Cranston studio but in the community as well. She has weekly classes at Women and Infants Hospital, Wheaton College, and private clients. At present, Heather's main desire is to blend the intention of giving back to the community what she has so graciously received while living doing what she loves to do. Heather is therefore a perfect match for Main Street Martial Arts Family and Community Center, where we are all working together in the community to spread the arts to all who are eager to learn. |
